Purpose:

The Courageous Truth Award celebrates the heroic efforts of people who went beyond what those around them were willing to do to assist an innocent person regain his or her freedom.  Our objective is to create awareness and a greater appreciation for our collective responsibility to protect the innocent.

Motivation:

When working on our first client, John Smith's, case in the summer and fall of 2010, we were struck by how many people had to turn a blind eye and were extremely careless about John's innocence.

Selection Criteria

The ideal nominee:

  • took extraordinary steps to fight for the truth;
  • in the face of significant opposition and/or pressure to conform;
  • which resulted in bringing us all closer to the truth; and
  • inspires us all to be better people.
